《徽州老照片》选编了有关徽州的老照片230幅，文稿134篇，用以图为主、文说图事的方式编排，全书15万余字。为能使读者厘清历史发展轨迹，按照清代、中华民国、中华人民共和国三个时期编排，每章以“人物”“纪事”“风物”谋篇，以照片纪年为序。上述230幅照片，是从征集的600多幅照片中精选的，以晚清民国时期为主，兼顾中华人民共和国时期，其中晚清民国时期的照片占75%以上。做这样的安排，也体现了抢救徽州老照片时不我待的编辑思想。
